Do We Still Need Feminism in 2025? Yes — Here’s the Data That Proves It
Feminism isn’t just history class or a slogan on a T-shirt. It’s a living, breathing movement because gender inequality still shapes the world we live in. Let’s unpack why we absolutely still need feminism — with real, verified statistics that show both the progress we’ve made and the work left to do.
1. Inequality Persists Even When Laws Say Otherwise
Even though many countries have laws against discrimination, lived realities often lag far behind legal texts.
🔹 Women continue to earn less and work more unpaid hours than men. Globally, women spend on average 2.5 times as many hours on unpaid care and domestic work as men — a burden that limits economic opportunity. (United Nations)
🔹 If current trends continue, gender parity in managerial roles won’t be achieved for nearly a century !!! (UN Women Knowledge hub)
2. The Gender Pay Gap Is Still Real Worldwide
There’s a reason we still talk about earnings gaps:
Across OECD countries, the gender wage gap sits at about 11.5%, meaning the typical woman working full-time earns only about 88 to 89 cents for every dollar a man earns. (OECD)
More broadly, large global studies repeatedly show women on average earn less than men — including limits in job choices, legal restrictions in some economies, and gaps in labor force participation. (UN Women Knowledge hub)
3. Women and Girls Are Still Underrepresented in Power
In national parliaments worldwide, women hold only about 27% of seats. (UN Women Knowledge hub)
Only around 35% of STEM graduates globally are women, and this figure hasn’t meaningfully changed in a decade. (UNESCO)
These gaps in leadership and decision-making matter — because representation shapes policy, culture, and opportunity.
4. Violence Remains a Daily Reality
Gender-based violence isn’t a relic of the past:
🔸 In some regions, one in five adolescent girls experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner in a 12-month period. (UNESCO)
🔸 In European countries, roughly 36% of women report lifetime intimate partner violence, and 34% report workplace sexual harassment. (OECD)
And this only scratches the surface: global research shows that violence — physical, psychological, and digital — continues to disproportionately impact women and girls.
5. Girls Still Face Barriers to Education and Economic Opportunity
While girls’ school enrollment has improved, inequities remain:
📌 In some regions, fewer than 25% of girls reach upper secondary school. (UNESCO)
Globally, women’s participation in the labor market remains significantly lower than men’s, and this gap has only narrowed slightly over decades. (UN Women Knowledge hub)
6. Global Goals Show Ongoing Gaps
The United Nations tracks progress toward gender equality as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the verdict is clear:
🔹 No SDG indicators on gender equality are currently on track to be met by 2030. (United Nations)
🔹 Women and girls still face higher rates of food insecurity, poverty, and limited control over their own health and economic futures. (United Nations)
So Do We Still Need Feminism? Yes !!! And the Data Proves it
Feminism isn’t about declaring women “better” than men. It’s about dismantling the systemic barriers that hold half the world back.
We need feminism because:
-
Women still earn less and work more unpaid hours.
-
Leadership and representation gaps persist.
-
Violence and discrimination remain pervasive.
-
Education and economic opportunities are unequal.
-
Gender equality goals are still distant.
Feminism gives us the language, the tools, and the community to push for real change — not just good intentions but measurable progress.
Imagine a World Where Equality Isn’t a Huge Statistic… But a Reality
That world is possible. And that’s why the feminist movement matters today — not just in history books, but in the classrooms, workplaces, cities, and policies shaping the futures of girls everywhere.
And it's why we started MPG More Powerful Girls. Because we know this is the reality and we want it to change. now. and quickly.
1 tshirt may not make all the difference. But it can make A difference. 1 girl wearing it feeling more powerful. 1 other girl seeing it on another girl and the message resonating in her and feeling more powerful. 1 girl is all we need to keep building a better world.
We hope you join us in this fight for equality!
Lots of love
